Ps Clinton Phillips 14th July 2013 (Haggai 2:4-5, Haggai 2:18-19)

Clinton Phillips, July 14, 2013
Part of the Sunday series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

Prophecy from 1996 to Langford Church.
Recap last few weeks.
If I lose focus on God, then we can miss out on what God has planned for us. Part of our leadership structure is to train up others for when they're gone.
Not about the pastor or leader, but about the body of Christ in action. Prophecy - God has spoken about us even before we thought about it! As you walk in life, the steps of a good man are ordered by God. God is going to lead us! Without vision, the people perish. All the enemy needs to do is distract our vision.
Whatever our eyes fix to, multiplies in our life! Hebrew definition of iniquity. Kalusha - set your affection on the house of God. God wants to give direction and purpose in our life. Each one of us has a part to play.
Haggai 2:4-5. Be strong! Work, for I am with you! My Spirit remains among you, do not fear.
The people get discouraged, see Haggai ch 1. When we talk about Beyond, saying God wants us to build our house. We want to be a presence in this community. God is increasing us. We are beginning to make ground in our community! Breakfast club, Christmas spectacular, meeting with principals, Aboriginal association ball - 150 kids in this church. Making inroads.
When you start something, you will come up against discouragement, opposition, disillusionment. People who would write lies and untruths against us. Part of the atmosphere over this place is fear and intimidation - but God has not given us a spirit of fear! We are not overrun by fear - we face fear. When we go into ministry, fear will come against us. There is a purpose that God has placed on us to build his house. No matter how big the opposition, God will give us the victory! We are the gift that God has given to this community.
Discouragement. The way to overcome discouragement is to get to work. The work is building his house. God is giving capacity to us to overcome (discouragement, depression, etc) in our lives.
Haggai 1:5,7 - consider your ways. And at both ends of the passage - "consider". Book ends. This is what it looks like when we're out of sync, when you don't prioritise my house. We sow so much, but reap little. When we give, God is partnering with us to release a blessing.
Haggai 2:18,19. (3 months later). But from this day, I WILL BLESS YOU. When we find out we need to change something, but it doesn't seem like everything's changed just yet, God says "Just do what I asked you to do - I will bring fruit to the vine..."
Let the weak say I am strong, let the poor say I am rich, it's what The Lord has done in us.

Haggai 2:4-5

Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the Lord. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the Lord. Work, for I am with you, declares the Lord of hosts, according to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not. (ESV)

Haggai 2:18-19

18 Consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month. Since the day that the foundation of the Lord's temple was laid, consider: 19 Is the seed yet in the barn? Indeed, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have yielded nothing. But from this day on I will bless you.” (ESV)
