Ps Clinton Phillips 11th August 2013 (John 16:7-13, Jeremiah 29:11, 1 Corinthians 2:6-12)

Clinton Phillips, August 11, 2013
Part of the Sunday series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

John 16:
Recap: what is concealed in the Old Testament is revealed in Jesus in the New Testament.
There are things that God would say to you today. Causes light to shine in your spirit. Prayer: "Holy Spirit, open my eyes. I want to see Jesus."
Ps Clinton's garden story. There is a plan that God has for our lives. We don't see it - we see the dryness, the need, the struggle. The Holy Spirit wants to bring a new way - I have a plan. God has our best interests in our heart.
*The sending of the Holy Spirit to us is just as vital as the work of the Cross in our lives for today.*
The vital role of the Spirit of God is more than just speaking in tongues. Reveals who God is, and who you are in God. Don't miss what the Holy Spirit is sent for. Jesus said it is to our advantage.
What is the benefit of the Holy Spirit in our lives?
Holy Spirit comes to address the root of the tree, not the fruit. Story of apple tree, anger. If you don't deal with the root of the issue, then the fruit will come back.
The root issue of sin is not believing: believing that you are the only person that makes decisions in our world. Don't just address the issue of doing what is wrong, but the underlying beliefs in your world. eg God providing for you: finance, marriage, needs.
John the baptist: repent and be baptised. Jesus comes: repent, and turn away from self (I am the provider in my life, not God). Spirit of God: believe in Jesus.
If we don't believe, then all the plans for Langford are just nice ideas.
vs 13: God wants to speak to us, but we're not ready to hear it. Q: what are holding back on?
There are things to come in our world, that the Spirit of God wants to reveal to you, but we're not in the position to hear it.
Story of 2010. Question: What do you see? What would you do if this is yours?
Jer 29:11 Would you trust me? Will you believe in me? I know what I'm doing. I have it all planned out!
1 Cor 2:6-12. God has plans for you.
It doesn't matter how dark your situation is, God is able to speak a word of light, to break through. To open your eyes and see His work in your life. God needs us to trust Him. (In all things, God works for good to those who love him, who are called according to his purpose). Choose to hold onto God. It's when we choose to hold onto God, that God reveals to us through His Spirit his plans.

John 16:7-13

7Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. 12I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. (KJV)

Jeremiah 29:11

11For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. (KJV)

1 Corinthians 2:6-12

6Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: 7But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: 8Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. (KJV)
