Part of the Sunday series, preached at a Sunday Evening service
Part 1 of 2 - The Pursuit of God
(Part 2 = Purpose of the Holy Spirit)
2 Tim 2:15 - Study to show yourself approved to God. Q: do we study the bible, really study it? Not doing it for us, doing it for God! Not enough to just do a daily reading, but need to really dig deeper.
Relationship with God
1. Simplicity. Methods, places, times, activities. Take out all these things, what's left? Just you and God. Our relationship with God is key. Take away everything else, what's left? Just He and me. Holy Spirit, person to person. Strip off everything, not an object, not a projection, not a thought, but a person-to-person relationship.
2. Profit. Luke 9:23-25. Anyone who wants to come after me, take up your cross and follow me. Rephrase: whoever has self-life will lose it. There is profit in self-life, but in the end you'll lose it! Not easy to take up the cross. Jesus is saying "Don't have a self-life". A self-life exempts you from having a relationship with God. You can have gain, but if you lose your soul, then you have nothing. I don't need to defend my life in Christ, God will do that for me. If I try to defend my self-life, I stand alone. The self-life needs to die.
A holy God demands no idols, no things, no places, no people before Him.
Story of Abraham, sacrifice Isaac. God wanted Abraham to strip everything of his self-life out in order to be wholly for God..
3. Tabernacle. Revelation of God. Old Testament is the externals, outward demonstration. New Testaments is the internal, inward demonstration. Tabernacle is the outward, external demonstration. Portrays Jesus.
Holy Place, first section where priests could go. No light except the candle stand, represent Jesus light of the world.
No other light, except the light of Jesus. Once a year, and only a priest could do that.
Mercy seat. Ark of the Covenant
To go into that area, Jesus led the way. The veil was torn, to give us access. It cost Jesus his life to make that possible for us.
If we want to get into the very holy of holies with God, then we need to rip the flesh of our life from us. It's going to hurt! But it's going to cost our lives if we want to enter into the Holy of Holies with Jesus.
When we come to God, we focus on Him.
A.W Tozer quote. Self-sins are not what we do, but who we are. God does everything for us, we must yield to him.
Story of Saul. Told to wait 7 days. Didn't obey God's word. Second story, told to completely wipe out a place. But kept the best "to sacrifice to God". Obedience is better than sacrifice. Because Saul did that, he lost everything.
1 Sam 15:24. Obedience is what God really wants
Does God want to be known? Does God want to reveal himself? Does God want to spend time with us? Does God want to speak to us? Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!
God is speaking to us, the question is: why aren't we hearing it?
Ezekiel 13:3-8. External is the walls, what is the internal? Spiritual armour. We need the word of God to be a fortress to you. We have to know God's word. Their focus was on trying to please people!
John 14:21. Those who accept my commands and obey. I will love them and reveal myself to them.
Proverbs 8:1. Everywhere, God's voice is calling to us, crying out. God calls out all the time, we have no excuse not to hear.
5. Looking to Jesus
Hebrews 12:2. Looking and believing. Focus on Jesus.
Private faith vs social faith.
Unity comes by our focus on Jesus. Story of pianos - all tuned the same are in key with each other if tuned with the same tuning fork. If we all look to Jesus, we are more in tune with each other.
6. Story of Eli and his sons.
NT: John 5:44. If we seek honour,

2 Timothy 2:15
15Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (KJV)
23And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? (KJV)
1 Samuel 15:24
24And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. (KJV)
21He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. (KJV)
1Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice? 2She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths. 3She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors. 4Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man. (KJV)
2Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. (KJV)
