Prayer and Unity
Relationships take time. We need to spend time talking to those in our closest relationships. Likewise in our relationship with God, we need to spend time with Him.
Romans 15:5-6. Need to have a relationship with Jesus.
Sheldon and Paul, about getting deeper with God. Easy to talk about being inspired on a Sunday, but then on monday you go to work and get smashed head-on. Easy to lose passion you had on Sunday. Set aside a little time each day to be with God.
Meditating on the word of God, hearing from God, build up. Make it part of your routine.
Matthew 6:9-13, the Lord's Prayer. Need to understand what we're really praying there.
- Our Father in heaven. The most perfect father you can ever imagine
- Hallowed be your name. Holy God, putting God first in our lives. He is worthy of all honour and praise
- Your kingdom come, your will be done. Submitting to God's will and control in our lives.
- Give us this day. God is our provider
- Forgive us our debts. Asking God for forgiveness.
- Lead us not into temptation. Asking God to help us in the future.
Don't set ourselves us for failure. We all pray differently. eg 20 minutes, complete focus on loving God. Not praying to be seen by men, but praying for God. Don't look to others, don't mimic others.
If we pray how God intended us to do it, then we can be confident that He will hear us and answer our prayers. 1 John 5:14-15.
Part of God's plan for us as a church is unity. Need to have personal relationship with God in order to have unity.
Rom 15:7. Accept one another. Jesus has accepted us, and is asking us to accept one another. God wants us to be unified with one heart and one mouth. We need to be together so we can glorify God together. eg Skye and Jason - wouldn't know each other if we didn't go to the same church, worship the same God, share the same vision.
Not going by how we feel, but get to the way that God feels.
Pete's song. We are the body.
We are an accepting church, united church. Called to be a family. For some people, this is the only family that they have. Need support from each other, called to be that, Don't be a family that is pulled in different directions, but be united in Christ.
John 17:14. Jesus prayer for believers. Prayer for unity. Jesus wants us to be the message that God loves this world. Starts with our own personal relationship.

Romans 15:5-6

May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. (ESV)

Matthew 6:9-13

Pray then like this:

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.

10 Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread,
12 and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
(ESV)

1 John 5:14-15

14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him. (ESV)

John 17:14-23

14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.

20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. (ESV)
