Ps Clinton Phillips 2nd March 2013 (Acts 1:1-13, Colossians 1:11)Clinton Phillips, March 2, 2014
Part of the Sunday series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
The Love Boat #2
Is the church a cruise liner, or a rescue vessel?
Not about the lights, or sound, but about being a light to the community. City of Gosnells, make this place somewhere young musos can come and gig. Aboriginal society disco here.
God has called us to pull people out of darkness into light. He wants to empower us by his Holy Spirit. When God speaks to you and I, he's letting us know what he's going to do with us. We have choice, to choose to follow God. Rescue people. Hard work, out in the storms, out of our comfort zones. Be the person who can make a difference in other people's worlds.
What are you waiting for? "Gunna". Waiting for: a boy, a girl, the right job, going to the gym, an apology, to forgive, for someone to ask "how are you going?", enough money.
Acts 1:1..5 The last words of Jesus to us.
The Spirit of God, through you and I, wants to show us what to do. Prayer: would you anoint me, so that I will do, not just teach. Being filled with the Spirit gives us power.
In this year, God is going to prove to us that He is alive. There are going to be things that we're going to have to go through. Not just wallow, stay in - go through. Jesus says that he will wipe away your tears - didn't say we wouldn't cry. There are going to be times of tired, worn down and grieving. But God is going to prove himself through me!
Sometimes in the circumstances of where we are, God is saying for us to stay there, and wait for the gift. We need to wait for the gift in our Jerusalem, in that place where it has been hard. Let faith arise in our heart. In this season and this time, come in closer to God. Your circumstances do not dictate who you are.
vs 5. John baptised with water, but in just a few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit. Baptised in the Holy Spirit = being joined to. Do you think that you can walk through that valley of the shadow of death and God isn't there? Get into a place of "no matter where I am, that's where You are".
vs 8. Power to be able or possible. Power for miracles, power for suffering. You will be my ambassador, you will be my evidence.
Col 1:11 Endurance in the midst of adversity. Pray that you will have the strength to stick it out over the long haul.
You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Not "maybe", but "will".
Acts 1:11,12. God is sending you!
John 20:19.21 - read it this week.
Acts 1:13. Continued in one accord in prayer. Disciples praying with Mary (not to Mary). In prayer, a posture of waiting. The posture that you need is prayer. Without the death of Jesus there is no resurrection. Get a different perspective on God. God is joining with us, in the midst of everything, no matter how low or high, rich or broke, bullies at school - God is with me! The way that we wait on him is not just to do things, but to pray!

1The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: 3To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: 4And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. 6When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. 9And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. 10And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. 12Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey. 13And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. (KJV)
11Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; (KJV)
