Part of the A Life Of Love series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

What's sawing got to do with it?
What I focus on, I live in. What gets my attention, that's the place I live.
Job 1:18. loses children. How do we handle loss and grief? Faith doesn't deny the situation, the circumstance, doesn't tell you not to feel. Go through grieving processes. When we go through the suffering of our lives, that God is with us. The peace of God that passes understanding is with us, guards our hearts and minds. In the midst of it, God is with you. Haircut story. Sometimes in situations we face, the things that we leant on and trusted in seem to disappear. But God says that he will never run off or crumble. We can lean on him and trust him.
Matt 14:25 Faith comes by hearing the word.. Hard to understand the peace of God that passes all understanding, until you are in a situation where you need that. If your faith is built, not by how much church/messages/worship, but by how much of the Word of God we hear. Storm, cried out in fear - "could it get any worse?". In the midst of that, the Word of God comes to us in our situation. I can look at situation or problem and just see it as a problem, or have eyes to see it in a bigger context. In that moment, God will speak something into your life: "It is I - do not be afraid". God is right here with me. Does the situation change? No, but something had changed in them. God is letting you know that he is with you.
vs 28. When God speaks a word, there will be opposition that says "did God say that to you?" But we need to be a people who know the voice of God - my sheep know my voice. In this season, when things don't seem to be working out - the promise of God vs your reality - to trust God and listen to his voice. In the midst of the storm, God is speaking to you - Don't doubt God's word to you.
vs 29. Stepping out of the boat - Right there God gives permission and ability. Is able to keep you, is able to hold you.
There are some people today who God has spoken a word to you, telling you to step out on the water. Given permission to do it, come! Our situation, our fears - but if God speaks to us a word, then step out on that word.
When we step out, God sustains us! Be obedient to His voice, we know his word. We wait for God to say "come" then we can step out. If we step out before that, then there's nothing to keep us.
vs 30 Peter reached out to Jesus, who kept him from sinking. Peter walked on water on a little faith. Imagine if he had a bigger faith? When they got back into the boat, the wind ceased. Peter sank when he focussed on the storm. Israel watched the Egyptian army washed away, but going into the promised land: "look at those giants!". We we begin to focus on the storm or the giants, we begin to lose focus on what God said. Be a person of faith!
how do we do this?
Psalm 16:8-9 Set The Lord before me, I will not be moved. Right hand is a position of authority. Therefore, my heart is glad ... my body will rest in hope (rest secure). Set God before you, and then let God's word work in your life. Your body will find rest. Rest = reset, adjust, counterbalance.
2 Cor 10:3-5. Bring every thought captive. Don't let thoughts, feelings, emotions, circumstance rule you and direct your ways.
Set. Capture. Hide.
Psalm 119:11 - your word I have hidden in my heart. not listened to a sermon - God's word I have hidden

Matthew 14:22-31

22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”

28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (ESV)
