Part of the Visitor Speaker series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
Perseverance for our purpose.
Recap: Then, Now, Next. We feel good when we have a purpose, and we find that purpose in relationship with God. It's important to persevere in our purpose when times get tough. We can have dreams - even non-church dreams eg our own house - but we can also have dream and purpose in God. Story - Joyce Meyer. Commit our plans to God. Prov 16:13
Easy to speak about dreams and goals, but then life happens, and we need to persevere in order to stay rooted in God. We need to know what that looks like
Heb 12:1-3. Run the race, fix our eyes on Jesus.
We're in a new year, time for our perseverance to begin. James 1:2-4. Consider it pure joy when you face trials of many kinds. When you're actually going through something, and you have to consider it pure joy. Skye's story. Don't have to be happy about it, but endure. When you have a God-given purpose in your life, people are going to think you're a little bit crazy. But it's God who helps us to persevere, to endure when trials happen to us.
Heb 12:1-3 again. Jesus is our perfect example. He chose to endure the Cross for our sake, endured pain, persecution - what will we do with our purpose?
Video. Olympic race. That man's purpose was to win the race. Things changed. His purpose was to finish the race. His dad said "you don't have to do that", but he said "yes I do", so they finished the race together.
As much as the story is about the man winning the race, it's also about the father fighting off everyone who wanted to stop him from finishing. Same with us - we have a heavenly father fighting for us! Even when we have to persevere, God does not leave us alone - he fights for us!
1. Strengthen your resolve. Know what your purpose is, plot your path.
2. Get rid of self-doubt. When you have figured out your purpose, the first thing that comes up against you is self-doubt. 2 Tim 1:7. God does not give us a spirit of fear.
3. Get people around you. Have fellowship, have community - people who aren't going to be negative, who will encourage your purpose
4. Keep things in perpective. Don't sweat the small stuff.
