Introduction. If you were an animal, what would you be? God refers to us as sheep. What does it mean to be a sheep?
Isa 53:6. We all like sheep have gone astray, each one of us has turned to our own way. Unflattering but true. A sheep is very needy. You don't come across sheep who have it all together. 100% dependant on a shepherd. You don't see sheep alone. They have a habit of getting lost. We are his sheep.
Matt 9:36. They were harrassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. A sheep needs a shepherd. The shepherd brings to the sheep everything they need. Technology is growing, and supplies a lot of our needs. However, we still need a shepherd. Without one, we are helpless, hopeless, getting stuck.
Psalm 23. The Lord is my shepherd, I shallnot be in want. Without a connection to the shepherd of our soul, we will be in want.
Ez 34:12-16 "I will be like a shepherd looking for his scattered flock..." You are a part of His family. No matter how far you are scattered, God is going to search for you himself. You may feel like you're lost - you're not lost! God is calling out to you today.
How are we to respond? It can't leave us the same.
Psalm 95:6 It will lead us to worship! It's what you do by yourself, when you're alone - do you sing a song of worship to yourself, or to God? Our response, when we realise we are under the care of a great shepherd, is to worship God.
John 10:11 I am the good shepherd. Jesus is the fulfilment of that.
Just because God rescues us, doesn't mean we can walk independantly - we need connection with God.
Look into - what does a shepherd do?
Luke 15:1-7 A shepherd values his sheep. Your value in God's heart is not dependant on who you are - it's dependant on God's goodness and mercy. God doesn't ask us to audition for his love - he just loves us! He values us so much.
Shoe story. God sees value in you, and wants to bring something valuable out of you. God wants to equip you with power and life.
One of the main jobs of the shepherd is to lead and to guide. This means that there is a destination in mind! You need to have a vision in your life. We want to live a life of impact and legacy. God wants it more for you than you want it for yourself. God is leading and guiding you to it, if you would allow it. The perfect will of God. If you're off-track, God wants to get you back on track because he has a purpose and will for your life.
Begin to trust the shepherd. Why is that so hard? We want to get in and meddle.
Proverbs 3:5,6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding. God wants to set you up for something better than you can get yourself.
John 10:10 my sheep know my voice. We need to get into that place of active rest, listening for His voice.
He protects and connects us. The enemy will try to disconnect you from the flock, but God knows there's strength in numbers. Do our best to live in unity. Why? Because we have our own insecurities - but God wants us to be connected to one another. God protects our life - physical and spiritual. You might be feeling under attack, but God is fighting for you! You are more than conquerers with God.
Isa 40:11 He tends his flock like a shepherds. He gathers his lambs close to his heart. God doesn't just leave you, he gathers them together. He carries them.
Psalm 23 - He nourishes us and restores our soul. He will give us the fuel to keep going.
He rescues us when we need rescuing.
John 10:10-12. The enemy comes to kill, steal, destroy...I have come that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.
