Introduction. Word: "it's in the house". Look around you - everything you need is here.
Holy Spirit. Old testament story, New testament application.
Salvation story - God created a good world, but something went wrong and God has set about to make it right. God is making a good creation right again. This is the agenda of God. The vehicle for doing this is the local church.
C3 Church is part of a plan and purpose a vehicle for making this world right - healing brokenness. Jesus prayed "your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven" - we are to call the things of heaven to earth to restoration of this world.
There is great mystery when it comes to the Holy Spirit. Genesis 1 - in the beginning God. Elohim - pluarity. A mind-bender. Trying to explain God - how do you do that? What? Who? The doctrine of the trinity undergirds our faith. The Holy Spirit is God. In this trinity there is community. When we understand the trinity, we come to terms that when we are walking with the Holy Spirit, then every single day we are walking with the fullness of God.
2 Kings 4:1-7 Elisha and the widow. Talks about how the Holy Spirit works in our life today. This story takes place in a time that is not sympathetic to God. Difficult to make ends meet. The widow is about to lose everthing. Being a widow is bad enough - no income, no protection. You needed to be married. The creditor was going to take her sons. Any level of protection she might have will be taken away. She comes to God, falls to the ground and cried.
This is a model of how God works, how God moves - your kingdom come, your will be done here on earth as it is in heaven.
1. God always works in partnership. Story of the cubby house. Painting the cubby house. Q: how much of the cubby house do you think the kids painted? There something about family that deeply desires to involve everyone. God wants to involve us in restoring the whole universe. He says he's not doing anything until his kids get involved. Elisha says to the widow - what do you have in your house? At no time Elisha and his faith overshadows the story of the widow. The widow owns the problem. When you encounter a dire problem/needs, it means participation. God's heart is to respond to brokenness, but invites the church to be part of the solution. Story - don't ask for just a few jars, ask for a lot of jars.
2. God always asks us to reach - not beyond our reach. Don't go small, go big. Not 80%, go 100%. Walls do not crumble at 80%. Giants don't fall at 90%. If we need God to move, he is asking us to commit 100%. If you give me 100%, giants fall, walls crumble.
God is concerned about the plight of the woman. God has this agenda, but He is really concerned with you and me. God is deeply concerned with what you're wrestling with right now. God is closer than what you think.
3. God always uses a vessel. Vs 5 bring another jar. God has a strategy that he outworks his power through us - he is looking for a vessel. 2 Tim 2:20 be a vessel, a container for God, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work. Shopping story - no bags! Coffee - you need a cup to put it in. Pizza - the box! The box isn't significant, but what's in the box brings meaning! It's what's inside the box that brings significance. We are a box, but God brings the oil. Without the oil there is no meaning or significance. God says - bring the box and I'll bring the oil.
Mary - the mother of Jesus, let it be as you said will be. Moses - I want you to talk to the most powerful person on earth. Esther - you are here for such as time as this. Just a vessel. God always uses a vessel, someone to partner with.
1 Cor 6:19,20 - your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is you, whom you have received from God. People are looking by vessels. Billy Graham qoute. Be the backbone, stand up.
We get excited about seasons of harvest, but we don't seen get so excited about seasons of sowing. We need to be just as enthused as the sowing process as we do the harvest process.
