Part of the Sit Walk Stand series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
Introduction. Recap last sunday - Community. I need the Jesus in you. We all need to do our part together. The economy of heaven. My maths is higher than your maths. 1 will put a 1000 to flight, 2 will put 10000. The power of unity, being together, releases something more powerful than what we can achieve alone.
Story: building model ship. Lost the ship. Found in a shop. If you want it, you have to pay for it. Bought the boat back. Can fix the boat. I made you, and now I bought you. The picture of redemption for us today. Redeemed = being purchased by the blood of God. What does that mean for us?
Eph 1:3- Blessed us with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places. God blessed the Israelites with natural blessings. The church of God has spiritual blessings. Parallels OT. Joshua and Ephesians. About people coming into their destiny in God. Here is the promise of God he wants you to step into.
Vs 4 chosen before the foundation of the world. Destined to be holy and without blame before him.
Vs 5. Adopted as sons.
Vs 6. He made us accepted in the beloved (nkjv) Accepted into his family, his body, made us as one. That’s why we need each other. God uses people to sharpen us, to knock off the rough edges in us.
Vs 7. In him we have redemption. Positioned with Christ. Forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of HIs grace. Here’s the influence of sin: sin (of pride) took out a third of heaven, and they were cast down. There is a power in sin, that makes it hard to break out of. Part of the deal is that God wants to bring redemption, not just the cross, but right here and now.
Vs 8 grace abounds to us. Recap: you’re a saint, you don’t have to earn your sainthood, being made into people who are faithful. In every area of your life, be faithful. Role, job, Marriage, service, prayer life - be faithful. That’s who God sees you as! As you go, raise the dead! Awake! Realise the position you have in Christ, that’s your awakening. Not because what I do, but because of Jesus Christ, so we can step into that authority.
Lead up to this - in verse 7, a switch from a past blessings that are current in your present.
Isa 43:1-3. Fear not, for I have redeemed you, I have called you by name. When you pass through the waters I will be with you. For I am the Lord your God. This isn’t God saying “I just for you bunch of losers ...” - never his attitude. Never frustrated with us. God was looking for an opportunity to buy us back. What’s the ransom that’s going to set us free? Old Testament, sacrifice is about causing people to come closer to God. Does our sacrifice bring us closer to God. God wants to break the spirit of fear. Perfect love casts out fear. Redemption - fear not, for I have redeemed you.
1 Peter 1:18-29. God paid a ransom
Heb 9:12 Jesus entered the most Holy Place, by his own blood. Once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.
Webster’s dictionary definition: redeemed, ransomed, set free, rescue by paying a price.
Rev 5:8-12 John is witnessing the goings on in heaven. Hears this song sung in heaven, and writes down the lyrics to it. Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing.
1 Peter 1:10-12 How redemption cost Jesus his life.
We have a pass into the most holy place, to have free access to the presence of God. So costly for us to receive it.
Don’t throw this confidence away!
