Part of the New Beginnings series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

Introduction - Challenge of living in the tension of the promise. Israelites being brought out of egypt into the promised land. 30 years later, still waiting for the promise. That’s the challenge we face. Do we allow circumstances to dictate, or do we say “the vision will come”. Faith is living in the tension of the unanswered promise. Are we so close to breaking open in our life, but we quit before the breakthrough? Do we worship by how we feel? Maybe we’ve lost relationship, faith? Maybe we’ve taken on discouragement?
Deut 4:1 - hear the decrees and laws I’m about to teach you. About to step into the promise, but there’s opposition. Instruction - follow these laws, that you might live. God gives his resume every time “I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob...”
Vs 7,8 - What other nation is so great to have their gods near them the way God is near us, whenever we pray? The word of God is to be followed, obeyed. It will give you life, and help you possess what you want to posses. This will help you to transition into the new beginning. Prayer is key. The word of God and prayer will usher in your new beginning, but also keep you in your new beginning.
There’s opposition: emotion, and all other kinds. That “blanket” over things. It’s an invitation to guard up in prayer and the word of God. God wants to speak to each one of us, we may practice that, but it’s still difficult.
Story: baby bottle. For some of us, Sunday is a baby bottle, we have once a week. Suck on the bottle, wonder why life sucks! God wants to awaken us to his word. Sunday by itself is not enough - you have to be feeding every day. Not being fed: ask yourself this question - what are you eating during the week? As a Christian need to be living by the word of God during the week. So that on Sunday, when we get that little bit, it bursts into life in us!
We can survive on manna from heaven. But about to enter the promised land and won’t get manna again. Need to plant crops etc. We are going to see growth, not just motivational, but believing God’s promise that He can do the impossible.
God is shaping us. The word and prayer. New beginning. Don’t hear “I *have* to read the bible, and I *have* to pray”. Come to God because we desire to be with him!
Psalm 119. Challenge to meditate on Ps 119. Brownie points, read John 15 with it. Abiding in the vine. Live in His word. Ps 119 setup with all the letters of the hebrew alphabet. 8 verses each letter. Theme is the word of God. It’s Jesus Christ - about Him, for you.
Vs 1,2. Blessed are the blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. Blessed are they who seek him with all their heart.
Vs 3. You have laid down precepts to be followed.
Vs 8 I will obey your decrees.
Vs 9 How can we keep our way pure? By living according to your word.
God is saying My word is important. God’s word will keep us.
Holy Spirit - John 14:26. The advocate, the Holy Spirit, the Father sends in my name, will teach you all things: prayer, the word, Holy Spirit.
Rom 12:2 Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
2 Cor 10:3-5 We live in the world, but we do not wage war like the world does. Take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
Metamorphosis. We are being transformed.
Our responsibility is to take every thought captive. The scripture flips our perception - we think we’re captive by our thoughts, but we need to take every thought captive. We don’t wrestle this in our own ability.
